It can be a struggle to come up with a theme for your story.

Everyone keeps talking about this mysterious thing called “theme.” Apparently, your story’s supposed to have one?

If you’re like me, sometimes it’s hard to come up with theme ideas on your own.

So, as an early Christmas present to you, I proudly present…

The Giant List of Themes for Your Story!

On this list, I’ve include over EIGHTY different themes you can use in your story.

These thematic ideals are divided into the following categories:

  • Coming of Age
  • Good vs. Evil
  • Love vs. Hate
  • Courage (quest-type stories)
  • Survival
  • Revenge
  • Power
  • Society
  • Prejudice

You are welcome to use any of these in your own story, or use them as a point to start brainstorming your own ideas.

Quick Note on How to Use This List

You’ll notice that this list is not divided into good and evil.

Good themes (like honesty and kindness) are mixed in with the bad themes (like rage and betrayal).

While you’re picking a theme, try not to think of them as either good or evil.

Instead, think of it like a sliding scale, or a line. Where do each of your characters fall on that line?

Ideally, you want your main character to start the story in the middle of this sliding scale. Then as the story goes on, the main character learns more about themselves and which theme they believe is right.

And Now, The List of Themes

So without further ado, here it is: the giant list of themes for your story.

This PDF is free to use, so you can share it with your writing buddies!

I hope this list is helpful to you!

Have you written a story with a theme before? What theme(s) did you use? Let me know in the comments!

(Seriously! I love getting comments from you guys.)

Thanks for reading, and merry (early) Christmas!
