Today’s post is going to be a bit shorter than normal. I’ve been working on a three week college course, so I don’t have much time for anything except homework. I plan to be back to my normal schedule soon!
So without further ado, here are five of my favorite websites for writers that I think you will find super useful.
5 Awesome Websites for Writers
- Ambient-Mixer (Ambient-Mixer.com)
First off, here is a site that I’ve been using for a long time: Ambient-Mixer.
This site is full of audio tracks that create a beautiful ambience in your ears. You can listen to the sounds of a rainy day in the city, or the Slytherin common room, or a Celtic harp playing in a grassy meadow.
I love using this site while I’m writing, because it helps bring the setting to life in my head.
Does your scene take place in a coffee shop? Listen to a looped track of coffee shop sounds. Is your character cooking dinner? Pull up a track of sizzling bacon and bubbling soup.
It is almost scary how much this website has helped my writing. And best of all, it’s free!
They also have an app version. I haven’t used the app in a while, since I prefer to use the website, but the app works well if you’d rather listen on your phone.
2. Most Common Surnames (NameCensus.com/most_common_surnames.htm)
If you’re like me, coming up with a character’s first name is the easy part. Once you try to come up with a last name, it becomes twenty times harder.
Fortunately, Name Census has a list of over 18,000 last names, sorted by popularity.
This website is so helpful when you’re having a hard time coming up with unique surnames for your characters.
I like to go to the surnames page and select the page for rank 2,000-5,000, just to make sure I get a unique name. Of course, that’s just a personal preference, and it depends on what you want for your characters.

3. Calligraphr (Calligraphr.com/en)
I haven’t tried out this site yet, but I really want to!
Calligraphr allows you to build your own custom fonts. Even though you can pay for a subscription, you don’t have to, because you can use the site for free.
I love writing in cool fonts, especially when I’m having a tough time getting through a certain chapter or scene. So I can’t wait to learn how to make fonts of my characters’ handwriting styles! It looks like a lot of fun to do.
Anyway, this site looks cool, and I’ve heard good things about it, so I thought I would share.
4. Fighter’s Block! (Cerey.github.io/fighters-block/#)
You’ve probably heard of this website before, but it’s amazing so I’ll mention it again.
Fighter’s Block! is an online game that encourages you to write. Pick a fighter, set a wordcount, and write for your life!
(If you have trouble using it for the first time, try clearing your recent search history and cookies. Other websites cookies can make the game freeze.)
But, yeah. Fighter’s Block! is a really fun way to hit your word count goals and get writing done. 10/10 would recommend.

5. Fantasy Name Generators. (FantasyNameGenerators.com)
And last but not least, Fantasy Name Generators.
This website is probably one of my most-viewed websites of all time, right behind Google Drive and YouTube.
Are you looking for name ideas? Any time period, any genre, this website has it covered.
And it’s not just character names listed here. This website has names for pretty much anything. Weapon names? Check. Animal Crossing town names? Check. Language generator? Check.
It’s free to use, and they have specifically stated that you are free to use any ideas and names you find through their site. This website is a goldmine of ideas. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
